Bp 2
Once again, some Republicans in the House have shown that they excel in flapping their gums above all else.

Today's designated Administration basher, Congressman Joe Barton represents the sixth district in Texas. This is an interior District that does not border on the Gulf.  Congressman Barton apologized to BP for what he called a shakedown being perpetrated by the White House.

Joining Congressman Barton in his party line attack on the Administration, were former and present Republican Congressmen, Michael Burgess, Tom Price and Dick Armey. Not to be outdone by her fellow Republican Representatives, Michelle Bachmann of Minnesota went on record saying that "the escrow account was a redistribution-of-wealth fund".

The $20 Billion escrow account is to be funded $5 Billion a year for four years. It will most probably be escrowed into an interest bearing account similar to where BP would have had these funds in any event.  If BP had felt this was too onerous a demand or would not help their position in the long run, they would have protested and claimed their legal rights were being abrogated.

But this was not the case. Looking beyond the obvious disaster they are responsible for, they have made many missteps to this point.  They have embarrassed the White house and themselves.  Agreeing to this fund helps them in the all important world of public relations and alleviates some of the already intense pressure that could be brought upon them by the White House.

Had the Administration not acted in a decisive and meaningful manner, they would have been attacked as being weak and Congressman Barton would have been leading the charge.

There has been no strong President who has not taken initiative and acted in the public good, who has not been criticized by opponents of a small mind and character for political advantage.
