Rupert Murdoch is the C.E.O. of News Corp., the global parent company of the now defunct British newspaper, News Of The World. Mr. Murdoch was questioned by a Member of Parliament this morning, regarding the hacking scandals brought about by News Of The World.
Mr. Murdoch was asked if he knew of settlements of £600,000 and £1,000,000, made to victims of the phone hacking. Mr. Murdoch answered he was not aware until a few days ago. Mr. Murdoch was then asked if these settlements were ever brought to his attention during his regular conversations with the Editor of News Of The World. Again Mr. Murdoch said there was no mention of them made.
Mr. Murdoch was then asked what kinds of things were discussed during these conversations. Mr. murdoch said he might say, "Whats doing"? In response the Editor might reply about a story of special interest, or expanded football pages or nothing special could be a reply.
You might wonder what priorities governed the exchange of information between the Editor of the paper and his senior employer. What information was considered good to convey or what would not be conveyed as to create an atmosphere of plausible deniability?
