A pregame riot delays Game 3 of the first modern World Series(10/3/1903), played at Huntington Grounds in Boston with the Americans (the future Red Sox) facing the Pittsburgh Pirates. It's estimated that about 25,000 fans are inside the ballpark, which has 9,000 seats. Attempts are made to keep the overflow behind ropes in the outfield, but the crowd surges forward and soon occupies the infield. Police try to drive the mob back into the outfield, but their efforts are useless. A reserve force of police eventually restores order by swinging billy clubs indiscriminately. The game takes place with the crowd only about 50 yards behind the infield and within 15 feet of home plate. The Pirates win, 4-2.
