It was the Monday night game, November 18, 2013. Important game for both teams playoff hunt.
It was New England possession on the Panther's 18 yard line. With the score 24 -20, North Carolina ahead of the Patriots and three seconds left on the clock, Tom Brady's pass into the end zone was picked off. Luke Kuechly had both arms around Rob Gronkowsky. A flag was thrown.
With everyone expecting a pass interference call, the referees consulted, picked up the flag, announced the game was over and walked off the field. No explanations were given. Had the penalty been called, the ball would have been placed at the one yard line and the patriots would have had one last chance.
The penalty was not called. The referees later said the reason they did not call the penalty was because the ball was under-thrown and un-catch-able. If Gronkowsky had not been held might he have gotten to the ball?
How about the holding, personal foul, and illegal touching calls that are made away from the ball and are regularly called. In this case if the ball was un-catch-able, then it was away from the ball. The NFL has some holes in it's rulebook that need to be filled in.
